Pulling sleds through in January, this portage kicked our butts through the untrammeled snow. The first stretch is steep, working up to a rocky hill top. The backside going into Wine is steeper yet, going sharply downhill with switchbacks on its way to Wine. We took this in the dark on the first trip through. On our way out a few days later, it was much easier retracing our steps.

Gradual climb out of Frederick on a good path before dropping steeply down to Wine on a rockier trail. There were some nice pines near the Frederick end.
